What is the likelihood that a patient actually has infective endocarditis if their transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is negative? According to one study, if the patient has a negative TTE and fulfills all of the following characteristics, there is a 97.9% chance that the patient does not have infective endocarditis:

  • Bacteremia was acquired nosocomially (in hospital)
  • Blood cultures sterile¬†within 4 days of antibiotic start
  • Absence of hemodialysis
  • Absence of endocardiac device
  • Absence of peripheral signs of endocarditis
