Left-sided native valve infective endocarditis

Patients with infective endocarditis (IE) that affects the native mitral or aortic valve who meet any of the following criteria should be strongly considered for valve replacement surgery.

Mechanical complications

  • Heart failure due to valvular dysfunction
  • Severe valvular regurgitation
  • Paravalvular abscess
  • Heart block

Pathogen factors

  • Resistant pathogen (e.g. ESBL, VRE)
  • Fungal pathogen (e.g. Candida)
  • Persistent or enlarging vegetation
  • Mobile vegetations > 10 mm
