In the case of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or Aspirin) overdose, dialysis should be strongly considered under the following circumstances:

  • Neurological dysfunction (e.g. seizure or coma)
  • Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema
  • Renal failure
  • Volume overload
  • Refractory acidosis
  • High serum salicylate levels
  • Presence for other acute indications for dialysis (i.e. “AEIOU”)
